How to Go Whale Watching on a Cape Cod Vacation

Cape Cod is known for its breathtaking scenery. Whether watching a sunset from the Cape Cod National Seashore or enjoying Mother Nature’s beauty from a golf course, there’s no shortage of ways to surround yourself with stunning scenery. Some of the best views can actually be found on the water. For an outing that has you taking in the area’s beauty while looking for some of the wildlife that call it home, go on a Cape Cod whale watching adventure.

Staying at Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis, MA, puts you within easy driving distance of both boat tours that take you out to the whales and beaches where you might catch a glimpse of them without leaving dry land. While whale watching season runs from mid-April through October, June through September are the peak.

Whale Watching Tours

One of the best ways to see whales on your Cape Cod trip is on a whale watching tour. There are two great options we recommend to our guests.

1. Hyannis Whale Watch Cruises departs from Barnstable Harbor. Trips generally run between three and a half to four hours, depending on where the whales are and how the weather is. During your tour, you can expect to see humpback, minke, or fin whales. You might also spot the occasional pod of dolphins and gray seals.
2. Another great option is Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, based in Provincetown. Because of the drive, this is more of a day-trip option and a great outing to pair with a trip to Cape Cod National Seashore. Your naturalist-guided trip lasts between three and four hours and passes by the lighthouses and dunes of the national seashore.

Shore-Based Options

While trying to whale watch from the shoreline doesn’t give you the up-close views a boat trip offers, it’s still an excellent option. On a clear day with binoculars, the following spots give you a real shot at spotting a spout or breach from dry land.

• Nauset Beach in Orleans is a favorite. Whales can sometimes be seen feeding off Nauset Beach in late fall.
• Found on the bay side of Dennis, both Chapin Beach and Cold Storage Beach provide visitors with wide, unobstructed views out over Cape Cod Bay. This makes them great spots to scan with binoculars, especially at higher tide.
• One of the best options is Race Point. While it is over an hour away from our resort, it is one of the best places for shore sightings.
